Periodontal, or gum, disease weakens teeth, sometimes to the point where those teeth become loose and are at risk of falling out or needing to be extracted. When this occurs, Dr. John A. Johnson Jr. can provide a periodontal splinting treatment to help support your teeth and keep them in place. Contact Johnson Dentistry at 979-774-7500 to learn more about periodontal splinting in Bryan, Texas, and schedule your consultation with our dentist.
Periodontal splints are used to stabilize teeth that have become loose due to a loss of supporting bone. This occurs as a result of periodontal disease, and is also known as secondary occlusal trauma. Heavy bite stress can also contribute to this condition. Periodontal splints are carefully placed along the affected teeth to hold them in place, significantly reducing the stress placed on your remaining gum tissue and helping you to enjoy your natural teeth a little longer.
Our dentist will begin by milling slots into the affected teeth and inserting a stabilizing device (usually wire) into those slots. This wire is then bonded to the teeth, often using composite resin filling material to provide a more natural appearance.
